Being an Island
Slowing down and tending to silence can induce a moment of contemplation and nonverbal communication.
It’s an invitation to play and sit with uncertainty.
‘Being an Island’ can describe a person who is introverted and quiet, but it can also mean finding inner peace and comfort in your own mind. To ‘be an island unto yourself’ follows Buddhist teaching about cultivating inner stability and finding refuge within your own mindfulness. John Donne’s No Man Is an Island speaks of human connection and mutual support.
I have been collaborating with a teenager on the Isle of Barra. Over a period of six weeks, we explored the idea of being an island. The creative activities were playful and fun, with no pressure to produce any great art. We used experimental drawing games and Surrealist techniques to provide inspiration and free the imagination.
